An excerpt from "My
Life's Story"
by Jesse E. Simister
I
was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. January
30, 1876. When I was about 5 years old, my mother
died. My parents was of poor circumstances, so a
friend of my mother offered to take care of me as
her own, for Dad was mostly working away out of
town. This friend's name was Mrs. Hudson (for
brevity's sake, I will refer to her as my Aunt).
I lived with my Aunt until I was 13 years of age.
During this time of my childhood days, I attended
several denominations and churches, such as
Church of England, Baptist, Wesleyans, and local
social missions. From these I learned their
creeds, doctrines, etc. When I was 13 Dad,
married again, we went to live in the opposite
side of our city. While there, Dad and Mom and
also myself attended a Congregational Church. I
used to sing in the choir. On one Sunday evening
the minister spoke on "FAITH"
and to demonstrate his theory, he used several
verbal illustrations, among which he used the
following------
"A Band of Mormons was crossing the Atlantic
Ocean, in a sailing vessel, when out on the open
sea, a violent storm came up. The Captain and his
crew did all in their power to keep the vessel
upgright -- The mountainous waves swept over the
shiep so much that the Captain, fearing the all
would be lost, went to the Leader of the Mormons
and said, "Do you think if your people prayed to
God he would hear you?" The Leader answered -
"Yes" -- The Captain then said, "You had better
start praying, for I fear we are all doomed for a
watery grave." They all gathered together in the
state room and began singing "Master the Tempest
is Raging." Then one prayed and while he was
praying -- the wind ceased, the rain stopped and
the waves settled down until the ocean became as
calm as a river."
This story, in and of itself was very interesting
to a boy of 13 like myself. But, it was what the
Minister said in conclusion, that set the spark
of curiosity (Shall I call it) off within me. He
said, "Never in
all my life,
have I ever read or ever heard of a greater FAITH
that what the Mormon people have in their God."
This incident changed
Jesse's life and with it, the rest of his
posterity. Please spend some time here looking
